Answer #1

2. Phenylmagnesium bromide (C6H5MgBr) is a grignard reagent (RMgX) and is very reactive . It readily reacts with water and get converted into hydrocarbon as follows ;

C6H5MgBr + H2O >>>>>>> C6H6 + Mg(OH)Br

Thus yield of grignard reagent will be reduced by wet apparatus (having water droplets) .

To avoid this , the apparatus should be dry for the synthesis of grignard reagent.

    Preparation of Triphenylmethanol Using the Grignard Reaction. RH ROOH CO TO R-R MgBr 1.ether 2.11-SO/10 Icther Grignard reagents are highly reactive and can undergo undesirable RCOH TH₂O side reactions if impurities such as water, carbon dioxide, or oxygen are present. If the organohalogen is added to the R-Mg-X magnesium too quickly, undesired coupling reactions can also occur. In this experiment, you will use 0.015 moles of either benzophenone or ethyl benzoate as the recipient of the phenylmagnesium bromide and this...

    After distilling your crude methyl benzoate, you set aside 4.93 grams of the purified ester. You then prepare the grignard reagent ( phenylmagnesium bromide ) by reacting 2.1 grams of magnesium with 14.12775 ml of bromobenzene. You add the 4.93 grams of methyl benzoate to the freshly prepared grignard reagent to form an addition product. Finally, after hydrolyzing the grignard addition product, you obtain 6.9 grams of the final product, triphenyl carbinol. What is the percent yield of triphenyl carbinol...
