EMPLOYEE WELLNESS
It is not only the school’s job to educate students but also to foster employees’ physical and mental health. Teachers, administrators, bus drivers, cafeteria and custodial staff, and contractors all contribute to supporting student health and academic success, as well as serve as positive role models. A comprehensive school employee wellness approach is a coordinated set of programs, policies, benefits, and environmental supports designed to support healthy eating, encourage active lifestyles, decrease tobacco use, manage stress, and avoid injury and exposure to environmental hazards. School systems that offer employee wellness programs and encourage healthy work environments decrease health insurance premiums, cut the cost of substitutes, and increase employee productivity and attendance.
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL CLIMATE
The social and emotional climate of the school addresses students’ psychological educational experiences that could impact engagement in school activities, relationships with other students, staff, family, community, and academic performance. A positive social and emotional school climate fosters effective teaching and learning, as well as promotes the health, growth, and development of students.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
The physical environment of a school includes the building, its contents, and the land surrounding the school. A safe and healthy physical environment protects occupants from physical harm as well as from biological and chemical agents in the air, water, and soil from both environmental contaminants and those purposefully brought in (i.e cleaning agents). When the physical school environment is safe, staff and students are able to productively pursue learning.
HEALTH SERVICES
The primary function of school health services is to provide first aid, emergency care, assessment and planning for the management of chronic conditions, and management of health and social stressors for students and employees. Additionally, health services may facilitate employee wellness programs, student and parent education opportunities, and ensure access and/or referrals to further healthcare providers. School health services actively connect and collaborate with school employees, students, families, and community healthcare providers to promote the health care of students and a healthy and safe school environment. Qualified professionals such as school nurses, nurse practitioners, health educators, physicians, physician assistants and allied health personnel provide these services.
COUNSELING, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL SERVICES
School-employed mental health professionals ensure that mental, behavioral, and social-emotional health services provided in school promote student learning and provide prevention and intervention services as needed. Services may include psychological, psychoeducational, and psychosocial assessments, interventions to address psychological, academic, and social barriers to learning, skilled consultation, and referrals to school and community support services. These can be accomplished through resource identification, needs assessments, school-community-family collaboration, and ongoing participation in school safety efforts. Professionals such as certified school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers provide these services.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
A partnership between the school and surrounding community facilitates support for student learning, development, and health-related activities. Additionally, these relationships with community groups, organizations, local businesses, faith-based organizations, cultural and civic organizations, social service agencies, health clinics, colleges and universities, etc. provide opportunities for community engagement, sharing resources, and service-learning for students. Schools may also reciprocate by sharing facilities with community members.
FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
Families and schools work together to support and improve the learning, development, and health of their students. The relationship between the school and families works to reinforces student health and learning in multiple settings—at home, in school, in out-of-school programs, and in the community. Family engagement is the shared responsibility of both school staff and families. The school is committed to making families feel welcomed and engaging families in a variety of meaningful ways. Families remain engaged and committed to student health and academic success
PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
A strong physical education program provides the opportunity for students to develop motor skills and knowledge, as well as to practice behaviors for healthy active living and critical skills such as sportsmanship, self-efficacy, and emotional intelligence. Instructors should be certified or licensed and endorsed by the state to teach physical education.
3.COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH EDUCAION CURRICULUM
Health education programs provide a setting in which teachers, parents, and community members partner to help students focus on health prevention concepts and to practice life skills in a safe and supportive environment. The National health education Standards form the framework for health education curriculum.
4.SCHOOL HEALTH INDEX
The School Health Index (SHI): Self-Assessment & Planning is an online self-assessment and planning tool that schools can use to improve their health and safety policies and programs. It is easy to use and completely confidential.
Using the School Health Index
The School Health Index (SHI): Self-Assessment & Planning Guide was developed by CDC in partnership with school administrators and staff, school health experts, parents, and national nongovernmental health and education agencies to
Enable schools to identify strengths and weaknesses of health and safety policies and programs.
Enable schools to develop an action plan for improving student health, which can be incorporated into the School Improvement Plan.
Engage teachers, parents, students, and the community in promoting health-enhancing behaviors and better health.
5.The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six types of health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including:
Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence
Sexual behaviors related to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection
Alcohol and other drug use
Tobacco use
Unhealthy dietary behaviors
Inadequate physical activity
YRBSS also measures the prevalence of obesity and asthma and other priority health-related behaviors plus sexual identity and sex of sexual contacts. YRBSS includes a national school-based survey conducted by CDC and state, territorial, tribal, and local surveys conducted by state, territorial, and local education.
