Newborn: When the baby is born it's called newborn baby. From birth to 14 days it is called as early neonate and from 14 to 28days it's called as late neonate.

Newborn Care:

  1. Maintaining patent airway:This is done by suctioning and clearing the airway.
  2. Maintaining normal thermoregulation : Covering the baby's head and body in order to prevent oxidation of brown fat leading to respiratory distress in the baby
  3. Care of the eyes:Clean the eyes of the baby from inner canthus to outer canthus ed it silver nitrate solution if mother is a known to infected with syphilis.
  4. Care of umbilical cord: At birth ligature of the umbilical cord is done above 5cm of the umbilicus. Check for two umbilical artery and one umbilical vein. It's absence indicates congenital anomalies.
  5. Care of the skin: Wipe the baby from all blood debris of mother, mucus, Bernice cassias, blood. Baby bath will be given according to the hospital policy. APGAR score: It was first elicited by Dr. Virginia Apgar.
  6. In APGAR the appearance, heart rate, respiration, reflexes and Activity is observed.
  7. Identification Id on babys'hand helps to identify the parents.
  8. Breast feeding should be initiated with in a hour of normal birth and of cesarean section then with in 3hrs.
  9. Administration of Vitamin K injection: should be given with in 72hrs of birth, Intramuscular, at the thigh muscles, 1mg has to be given to prevent Bleeding.

These are essential care given to the Newborn

Maternal care

  • Assess the condition the mother, to get baseline data.
  • Check the vital signs of the mother. To assess for any alterations like hypotension.
  • Check for the bleeding flow. Ensure all the placental remains have been removed.
  • Provide pad to the mother.
  • Provide hygienic care to Mother.
  • Provide oral fluids to mother if normal vaginal delivery
  • Provide good nutritious food if normal vaginl delivery.
  • Assess for any discomfort of the mother and report to physician immediately.
  • Check the level of consciousness of the Mother if cesarean section.
  • Provide IV fluids until Mother starts oral feeds.
  • If Mother has delivered This negative baby and Mother is That positive then Anti D immunoglobulin Egoism injection should be given with in 72hrs of delivery. To prevent complications for next child.
