Describe how overwhelmingly important socioeconomic position is to the individual’s health status.
It is considered that socio-economic status or position plays a vital role in the health status of an individual. The poorer socio-economic status leads to the poorer health status. In many cases the socio-economic condition influences the health but in some diseases the economy does not bothers at all, such as in case of leukemia. But in some the higher economic group will lead to get diseases like melanoma in males of 30-69 years due to over exposure of skin in the sun during holiday trips whereas it was more common in adults greater than 70 years of age from the poor economic state due to over exposure to sun during the time of agricultural works.
In the year 1987, scientists presented papers on stating that the health improved in the individual along with the improvement in the socio-economic status of the same individual.
But the socio-economic status also effects the health of an individual as increase in the socio-economic factors leads to the development of various different conditions, the main factors are: lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, obesity and behavioural characteristics such as smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol while attending different parties etc.
On the other hand, people with large sum of money are the only ones who are able to get proper medical facilities and are able to treat various disease conditions with good treatment and medications. Whereas the poor people with limited services provided by the government as well as the people who does not have enough knowledge and position in the society will not have clear idea as well as monetary support to treat their disease conditions. Hence in various cases where the poor people will not be able to seek help due to less income, the people tend to suffer from serious illnesses and ultimately die due to inadequate health facilities provided.
So, the socio-economic status plays a very important role in the individual's health status.
