# Pharmacological action

- antagonizes dopamine and serotonin

# Therapeutic uses

- schizophrenia

- acute manic/mixed episodes

- maintenance bipolar I

- depressive episodes assoc. with Bipolar I mania

- Treatment of resistant depression

- increased liver enzymes

2. Seroquel :

# Drug classification - antipsychotic

# Trade name - Seroquel

# Indicated for schizophrenia, major depression,and acute episodes of mania and depression in pts with bipolar disorder. In pts with schizophrenia the drug can improve positive & negative symptoms as well as cognitive function. Strong blockade of 5-HT2 receptors and weaker blockade of D2 receptors.

# Side effects

PROLONGED QT.May cause sedation, orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, drowsiness,dry mouth,hyperglycemia, and sweating.Moderate risk of metabolic effects such as weight gain, diabetes, dyslipidemia.

3. Risperdal :

# Classification - atypical antipsychotic ( therapeutic ) , Benzisoxazole derivative ( pharmacological )

# indications

Schizophrenia in adults and adolescents age 13-17 yrs

Bipolar mania (oral only) in adults and children 10-17 yrs in adults and children 10-17 yrs; can be used with lithium or valproate (adults only), Treatment of irritability associated with autistic disorder in children age 5-16 yrs

# therapeutic effects

Decreased symptoms of psychoses, bipolar mania, or autism

# adverse reactions/ side effects

CNS: neuroleptic malignant syndrome, aggressive behavior, dizziness, extrapyramidal reactions, headache, increased dreams, increased sleep duration, insomnia, sedation, fatigue, EENT: pharyngitis, rhinitis, visual disturbances, Resp: cough, dyspnea, GI: constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, abdominal pain, GU: decreased libido.

4. Geodon :

# Trade name - geodon

# Classification - atypical antipsychotic

# Indications: Ziprasidone

Behavioral emergencies for patients with severe agitation or aggressive behavior resultingi in interference with patient care or patient/crew safety.

# Adverse reactions: Ziprasidone

Extrapyramidal symptoms dystonic reactions, Somnolence, Dizziness, Headache, Orthostatic Hypotension, EKG changes (prolong QTc), Rash, Nausea and vomiting
