LO 7.2 Significance of fat soluble vitamins in human nutrition

            * Fat soluble vitamins include Vitamin A.D,E and vitamin K these are essential

              vitamins for building and growth of all cells.

            * Vitamin A help to maintain skin integrity of epitheliem especially the mucous membarines in

               the mouth,eyes,digestive tract,salivary glands and genito urinary tracts.

            * Vitamin A also help to maintainance of normal vision in dim light,maintaining the structure

               of myelin sheath and act as a anti infective vitamin.

          * Deficiency of vitamin A result in night blindness and follicular keratosis (Rough skin).

          * Vitamin D promote absorption of calcium and phosphorous from small intestine and deposit

             of calcium phosphate in the bone.

          * Vitamin D help to prevent malformation of tooth in children and useful to maintain a good

             immune system.

          * Deficiency of vitamin D result in Rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

          * Vitamin E help to maintain stability and integrity of cell membranes and act as a antioxidant

          * it is considered as a anti aging vitamin and help to improve immune system of body .

          * Vitamin E helps nerve tissue functions and essential for utilisation of iron.

          * Vitamin E defiiency result in muscular dystrophy, poor absorption of fats and pheripheral

             neuropathy.

          * Vitamin K is essential for formation of prothrombin and clotting of blood.

          * It participate in formation of calcium binding protein in intestine and role in action of active

            vitamin D hormone calcitriol in the synthesis of bone.

         * Vitamin K deficiency result in prolonged clotting time and bleeding in newborn babies.

LO 7.7 Characterstics of water soluble vitamins

           * Water soluble vitamins are soluble in water and they can not stored in the body so daily

              supply of these vitamins is needed.

            * It consist of all B complex vitamins and vitamin C with a total 13 vitamins.

            * This vitamins participate in metabolic activities of the body and act as coenzymes in

              carbohydrate,fat and protein metabolism.

            * B complex vitamins are useful in maturation of red blood corpuscles normal functioning of

               skin,intestine and nerve system.

            * Vitamin C helpful in formation of collagens present between the cells,metabolism of the

               cholesterol and utilisation of folacin.

LO. 7.11 Foods that ensure adequate vitamin and low in calories

                   * Skinless,boneless chicken breast.

                   * Fish and seafood curry.(Salmon curry and scallops)

                   * Vegetable curry or salads.

                   * Chinese cabbage dishes.

                   * Spinach.

                   * Mushroom curry.

                   * Fruit juices.( Grapes,watermelon,blueberry,orange,kiwi etc)

                   * Low fat cottage cheese.

                   *Chestnuts.

LP 7.12. Valid and invalid reasons for taking vitamins.

                           Valid reasons

                                   * Vitamin supplements are used to treat vitamin deficiency diseases

                                      in people with malnutriton and poor nutritional habits.

                                  * People with digestive disorders vitamin supplements are necessary to

                                     for maintain normal body functions.

                                  * In case of pregnant women vitamin supplementation is needed for meet

                                    the requirement of both mother and baby.

                   Invalid reasons

                                   * People who are taking balanced diet vitamin supplementation is not needed.

                                   * Patient admitted with health problems but their digestion system is functioning
