Lithium salts

Are classified as the mood stabilizer.

It is used majorly to treat the bipolar disorders. It acts as mood stabilizer also.

It reacts with various neurotransmitters in brain causing the decrease of norepinephrine level and increase in serotonin synthesis.

Side effects: ADRs & toxicity effects: tremor, diarrhea, increased urination and thirst.

Route of administration is orally as well as parenterally.

Other pertinent information: do not use lithium salts along with the calcium channel blocking drugs like nifedipine as there is risk of neurotoxicity.
