9.1 .STOMA NECROSIS

Reason: Adequate blood flow is needed for the proper functioning of the stoma. Decreased blood flow causes necrosis of stoma.It usually occurs within 5 days after surgery.

9.2. Healthy stoma appears in red colour. In necrotizing stoma discoloration present and appears like cyanotic, black,dusky bluish purple or brown colour.The mucosa appears in hard ,dry and foul smell also present.

9.3. *Postoperative assessment of stoma to prevent complications

*Manage abdominal distension as per doctor's order

*Level of necrosis must be determined, if it occurs

*Using an endoscope assess the necrosis

*In extensive necrosis inform the surgeon for reconstruction and stoma repair.
