The National organization of Nurse practitioner facilities outlines nurse practitioner leadership with 6 core competencies.

  • Initiating and guiding change.
  • Fostering collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
  • Using critical and reflective thinking.
  • Advocating for improved access and cost effective health care.
  • Developing and implementing innovation.
  • Using effective communication.

NP should evaluate and integrate evidence from nursing and other disciplines to improve process outcomes and create new methods founded on incorporated knowledge. NP should exemplify leadership qualities including collaboration, initiation of change, advocacy for improved health care and advance practice nursing, innovation, communication and critical thinking. They should use best evidence, consider extraneous variables impacting healthcare, participate in peer review and anticipate change to ensure quality. They should lead on generating, disseminating and translating knowledge as well as analyze clinical guidelines and should be knowledgeable in navigating and negotiating health care systems to improvement of health care for all.
