Suppose that a friend of yours states: " The optimal pollution level is clearly zero. Any level of pollution is obviously undesirable".
How would you respond to your friend?.
The optimal level of anything is attained where the marginal cost
of producing or abating such thing equal the marginal benefit
(marginal revenue) of such thing.
It is true that zero level of pollution is desirable. However, desirable level is not the optimal level.
The optimal pollution level is that level corresponding to which the marginal cost of abating pollution equals the marginal benefit from such pollution abatement.
This means that if at zero level of pollution the marginal cost of abatement is greater than the marginal benefit then in such case the zero level of pollution would not be optimal.
So, optimal pollution levels and the desirable pollution levels are two distinct things and should be seen as such and not to be confused as one and the same.

Suppose that you and a friend are discussing the effects of pollution on society. Your friend argues that the best level of emissions for society as a whole is zero. Your friend argues that zero emissions would cause zero environmental damage to society and would, therefore, be optimal. a) Explain using the tools of economic analysis from class, show that the optimal level of emissions is generally not zero. Show how the optimal level of emissions is determined for any...
Suppose that a friend of yours is considering crowdsourcing for a new smartphone app. Since he is not a programmer, he needs help developing the software. However, your friend has significant marketing outreach because he is in contact with the very people who would be most likely to download and pay for the app. Describe the advice you would give your friend, informing him of the advantages and disadvantages of crowdsourcing for his project.

Suppose a friend of yours thinks that Coke, Diet Coke, and Coke Zero all have the same refreshing taste, but you strongly disagree and think that people prefer (regular) Coke. The two of you do a blind taste-test (after quarantine, of course!) to test the hypothesis that people prefer (regular) Coke over the other two choices. In your study, 15 out of 30 people preferred (regular) Coke. (a) [2 pts] Identify and describe the parameter of interest. (b) [4 pts]...

The marginal damage averted from pollution cleanup is MD = 200 – 5Q. The total cost associated with pollution cleanup is TC = 10Q + 0.5Q^2. a. What is the optimal level of pollution reduction? Show your work and explain b. What amount of tax per unit would generate the optimal amount of pollution reduction from part (a)? Show your work and explain
A friend of yours from college, who you haven’t talked to in 3 years, sends you an email asking you to meet him for lunch. He says he’s got a great idea for a business and wants to run it by you. At lunch he explains that he’s been developing new flexible screens for...
