The concerns which Ms Corneu has raised is very genuine .Effective communication is one of the international patient safety goal because a nurse patient communication is the basics in healthcare nurse uses communication to communicate the treatment approach and progress .when the communication is not effective it can lead to wrong perception errors .

What actions would you take ?

As soon as Mrs Corneu complaint about your nurse Tran being a director nursing you own the responsibility of errors so you should immediately apologise for the discomfort caused to the patient .and yield to her wish to allowing nurse Maria to take care of her .After which she should call Nurse Tran and check with her the actual incident and explain the feeling a patient feels when a nurse chit chats in her regional language .you will have to explain her in the form of empathy which means you should ask her to be in patient shoes and describe her feeling which will help her to understand.

Communication policy and training:As a director of nursing you should devise a communication policy which lays strict rules in the medium of communication as English .You should come up with a protocol of communication on clinical setting and the same should be communicated and trained to other nursing personnel. Nurses should be sentized on the same topic.

Discuss how will you feel when someone who serves you speaks in the language you don't understand?

When someone speaks in the language which you don't understand it can lead to being paranoid because you don't know what they are talking you may always feel that the nurses are talking about you .and if it is during hygienic activities the nurse giggles or laughs .I may feel that the nurse is making fun of me .

This can lead to a feeling of being alone and solidarity and a sense of hopelessness like nobody is there to understand me or communicate to me .If the nurse is chitchatting to her colleagues continuously I may not find any room to speak even if I have any needs, concerns I may not speak thinking that the nurse is not bothered about me and she is busy in her work .

This leads to overall feeling of being sick and not interested to continue in the hospital.

In short chitchatting in a regional language during patient care is against the communication policy and it can make your patient feel lonely and Agitated about it .
