The safety measures to give mouthcare to an unconscious patient are

  • Informing or explaining the procedure to the patient though thru are unconcious.This can stimulate them psychologically .
  • Ensure the opposite side rails of the bed is up to avoid any risk for falls
  • Use of disposable gloves to avoid any infection
  • Provide side lying position or high Fowler position to avoid aspiration
  • Padded tongue blades can be used to avoid injury to oral cavity when opening the teeth to provide care
  • Remove the secretion with a suction or asepto syringe to preve ng t aspiration
  • Mouth wash can be used to reduce infection
  • In case of denture, give oral care after removing it
