Need help with Organic Chemistry, understanding the labs.
1) Since melting point of acetanilide is less than that of pure acetanilide hence product contain some impurities in it. One such impurity is acetic anhydride. Presence of impurities reduce the melting point.
2) Aniline dissolve in Dil. Aqueous HCl because it form anilinium salt which become soluble in water.

3) Silica gel and alumina are two adsorbent used in column chromatography or TLC.

1. (5 pt.) Soon you will synthesize the analgesic acetanilide in lab. It’s m.p. is 114C. What does it indicate about your product if you obtain a m.p. of 103 - 112C. Explain. 2. (6 pt.) Neither aniline nor nitrobenzene is particularly water soluble. However, one is completely soluble in dilute aqueous HCl. Which one is soluble, and explain why? (For maximum credit, provide a chemical equation for your answer.) 3. (5 pt.) Name the two adsorbents that are most...
Need help on providing reactions that describe the acid-base
extraction and neutralization processes used in this experiment.
Provide a statement of solubility of each starting material and
product.
The experiment to be performed this week involves liquid-liquid extraction using a separatory funnel. Read chapter 15 in Zubrick to familiarize yourself with the use of the glassware for extraction and washing. Acid/Base Extraction Liquid-liquid extraction is a technique that can be used to physically separate two substances that have varying solubility...
Separating a Mixture, Recrystallization, pre-lab
assignment
could you also explain why you chose that substance for the empty
spaces and question marks
EXPERIMENT 4 Pre-Lab Assignment Separating a Mixture, Recrystalliration Name Date 1. Complete the following flowchart which shows how to separate a mixture of sand, sodium chloride and acetanilide. Notice that after a separation process (a down arrow) the filtered solids are shown on the left and the filtrate (the liquid) is shown on the right. The terminal step...
Let's assume you have a mixture of equal parts benzoic acid, sand and toluene that are intimately mixed together (the crude material is a mixture of solid and liquid). Propose a procedure to separate these three components using any of the chemicals commonly available (you've used all of the "common" chemicals in the lab by now) in the organic chemistry teaching laboratories and observing the typical limitations with the instruments and techniques (such as not being able to distill or...
Organic chemistry post-lab question: "Why is important
to add the alkyl halide dropwise in your reaction? (Hint: your
reaction is not heated, but you still need a water-cooled
condenser!)" Please answer in detail!
Here is a copy of the experiment, thank you!
The Grignard reaction is an important synthetic process by which a carbon-carbon bond is formed. Magnesium metal is first reacted with an organic halide. The resultant organo-magnesium halide (Grignard reagent) is then combined with a carbonyl compound, ultimately...
Can
you help me determine if I am correct and help me find the ither
answers to this functional group lab worksheet?
18 w paper 1 we by addin trecome char Discussion of Properties and Test Ora general undergo dition reactions, whereas by substitution reactions. These two types of d e beds and womate compounds we characterized described in equation form as follows: action Addition Reaction Substitution Reaction (Note: numbers in boxes to the left refer to w in the...
Construct a flow chart describing the seperation of the
mixture and the isolation of each compound in this experiment. (Lab
steps/procedures includes for reference)
4. Construct a flow chart describing the separation of the mixture and the isolation of each compound in this experiment. A commonly used method of separating a mixture of organic compounds is known as liquid-liquid extraction. Most reactions of organic compounds require extraction at some stage of product purification. In this experiment you will use extraction...
please answer all parts I am trying to check my
answers.
Recrystallization of Acetanilide Recrystallization is an important method used by chemists to purify solid compounds. When a chemist conducts a chemical reaction as shown in Scheme 1, it will rarely go to 100% completion, and will frequently produce byproducts. These byproducts and some of the unreacted starting materials will be present in the end as impurities. Chemists need ways to remove these unwanted impurities so they can isolate their...
Attached is the lab experiment. Here are the questions I need
help with:
1. What is the purpose of each of the following steps in this
experiment?
a. Adding solid NaCl to the reaction mixture
b. Repeated washings with water, sat'd NAHCO3, and brine
c. the pipet column chromatography
2. Which compound, cyclohexanol or cyclohexanone will have a
higher Rf on a TLC plate?
3. What is the advantage of using sodium hypochlorite as an
oxidant over CrO3 or Na2Cr2O7...
What are the desirable characteristics of a solvent to be used
in the recrystallisation of a solid product? (Hint: what is the
underlying purpose of doing recrystallisation, aside from making
the product look attractive?)
EXPERIMENT5 PREPARATION OF BENZOIC ACID Oxidation of a Primary Alcohol In this experiment, a primary alcohol (benzyl alcohol) is oxidised to a carboxylic acid (benzoic acid) by a strong oxidising agent (potassium permanganate) Because the synthesis reaction is carried out in basic conditions, the carboxylic acid...
