Answer #1

Support departments provide essential support services to the production departments. For example: Human Resources, Maintenance, and Cafeteria. On contrary the producing departments have a direct responsibility for creating the products and services sold to customers. For example: Finishing, Assembly, and Machining.

The support departments serve the producing departments however do not create a sellable goods or services. Moreover the costs of the support departments need to be allocated to production departments for the valuation of inventory. On the other hand, producing departments create the goods or services that an organisation is in business to make and sell.
