In order to take proactive measures to increase the proportion of historically disadvantaged minority groups, the various federal, state and local laws adopt a complex set of policies which refers as Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action ensures equal employment opportunity and equal respect and treatment for all; irrespective of their race, creed, color, religion, sex or nationality. Strict quotas, extra outreach efforts, student financial aid specifically for minorities etc. are all parts of measures taken in order to accomplish the objective of preventing past discrimination.

5 bases for protection that have been identified are as follows;

a) Race - Prevention of racial discrimination

b) Color - No discrimination for blacks

c) Sex - No discrimination for women during pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions

d) National origin or Citizenship - No discrimination based on nationality or citizenship status

e) Religion or creed - No discrimination based on religion or creed
