Inside the garage shop you can see unmarked chemical containers and no sign of safety or first aid equipment and you notice that the work space has lots of environmental health hazards. You realize that  you need to think through the steps for assessing and addressing this public health issue.

ANS 1 : The above situation may lead to occupational hazard. The condition of the garage may lead to following environmental or occupational health problems-

• Chemical Hazard - Since the chemical containers are unmarked, mishandling may lead to accidents leading to diseases due to chemical agent.
• Mechanical Hazard - A garage may have a lot of machinery, protruding and moving parts. It is also mentioned that there is no sign of safety or first aid equipment. Hence the workers working there are very prone to accidents.

ANS 2.1 : The routes of exposure to these environmental health problems are -

• For Chemical Hazard - Chemical agents acts in three ways : local action, inhalation and ingestion. In the above situation in the garage the chemical hazard may take place through local action and inhalation
• For Mechanical Hazard - Contact with the machinery in an unfavorable way may lead to mechanical hazard.

ANS 2.2 : The health effects of these environmental health problems are -

• For Chemical Hazard - The ill-effects produced by chemical hazards depends on the duration of exposure , quantum of exposure and individual susceptibility. may lead to may lead to chemical burn, dermatitis, respiratory distress, chemical intoxications etc.
• For Mechanical Hazard - About 10% of accidents in industry are said to be due to mechanical causes. Mechanical hazards usually leads to injury or trauma which in severe cases may lead to life long physical defect or in worse cases death.
