It is true that colonial American history teaching has been steered to focus on a black/white dynamic. While it is understandable that the majority of inhabitants within these colonies were black or white it is important to understand that were the original inhabitants. The reason for this being that genocide did occur to "Native Americans". Dease was said to have been a major cause in the death of the "Indians" as though by bad luck. However, it was not mentioned that diseased items such as blankets, under the guise of gifts, were purposefully sent to tribes as a means to diminish their population. They were enslaved, they were discriminated against, and they were robbed of their history as well. Eventually, leaving a diminished population of "natives" that their part in the makeup of colonial America has been overlooked. However, procreation between the remaining indigenous people and the black and white people of the colonies occurred. This created a mixed-race population. They were not seen as equal and those who resided in colonies lived lives much like that of the African slaves. They played a part in the population, the work, and the diets of those who lived in colonial America (lecture p.5-7). Native Americans and African slaves were set against each other most likely as a means to keep them from coming together and revolting (Hammond p.12).
