An infection can be caused by simplest of the mishaps that go unnoticed. The five things a phlebotomist can personally do to avoid infection according to me would be:-

  1. Ensuring personal hygiene i.e. wearing mask and gloves while collecting blood samples from the patient.
  2. Maintaining cleanliness and sterile environment within the lab by regular inspection of the lab.
  3. To develop the habit of wiping the site of blood collection with alcohol before and after the process.
  4. To use clean, sterile and fresh needles while operating patients along with proper disposal of used needles.
  5. To properly label samples and avoid mixing of samples.
