ETHICAL DILEMMA The Case of the Overly Assertive Employee In this chapter, we learned about several conflict-han- dling intentions. Each of these intentions involved two dimension-assertiveness (the degree to which one party attempts to satisfy his or her own concerns) and coop- erativeness (the degree to which one party attempts to satisfy the other party's concerns). Consider these dimen- sions, and then put yourself in the shoes of the manager if she is happy with what she contributes to projects, she meekly replies, "I don't mind. I don't want to make any waves. You sense that Janna is unhappy but also scared of a confrontation with Kim. Kim is getting more recognition and compliments from the CEO because she does high- profile work. You know this puts Janna at a disadvantage in her career. On the other hand, Kim is overly assertive. You know that if you ask her to be more cooperative, it could cause more conflict in the office described below Tom is a manager at a small copy supply firm. Their marketing team consists mainly of two employees: Janna and Kim. Kim is incredibly assertive, while Janna is incred- ibly cooperative. In this case study, two kinds of conflict handling intentions are mentioned, which have two dimensions. 1) Assertiveness- the degree to which one attenpts to satisfy him or her own concerns) 2) Co-operativeness- the degree to which one party tries to satisfy other party's concerns.

Imagining myself to be Tom- a manager at small copy supply firm, I have two employees in the marketing team, i.e. Janna and Kim. Janna is co-operative in nature and Kim is assertive in nature. Janna is doing tedious and unpleasant tasks and though she is unhappy with the work, she couldn't confront that with Kim. Kim on the other is doing high profile work and receiving appreciations from the C.E.O.

Being a manager, I know that Janna is unhappy. If i tried to divide the work equally, it will disturb the relation between Janna and Kim by leading to conflict. This is because, Kim will not keep quiet being assertive in nature and will behave loud to satisfy her concerns and might fight with Janna. Janna on the other hand, will anyways do the work whether she is happy of unhappy because, she is co-operative and will always thinks about others concerns. I need to be quite as the situation is balanced, though it is disadvantage for Janna, as a conflict is initiated it will spread to other teams also and entire work environment will be collapsed.
