As most of you have read, the NAS Report of 2009 was critical of Pattern Analysis. How have things changed since then?
In 2009, the National Research Council of the United States National Academy of Science (NAS) reported the argument about the need to strengthen forensic science and published it under the title “Strengthening forensic science in United states”. It demanded devotion of efforts and resources for: Establishing National Institute of Forensic Science (NIFS), separation of forensic labs from law enforcements, establishment of quality control and assurance procedures, forensic science conjunction with Center of disease control, development of tools for testing, validation, etc..
Since then lot of changes happened in order to improvise the conditions and demands, various “Integracy Working Groups” were called for certification, licensing, education, ethics, communication, research, development, standards and protocols. Large number of research projects actively existed around the federal government. Funding for Forensic Science R&D has increased remarkingly.law enforcement agencies also resulted in enhanced “interoperability”. Now, NIJ has funded human factor “working groups” to cover firearms examination along with DNA mixtures.
