Answer #2

Bronsted-Lowry acid is defined as a substance which donate the proton (H+) to the other molecules

Base is defined as a substance which can accept the proton from other molecules.

a)   HF + H2O   --------------- H3O+   + F-

   acid-1   base-2    acid-2    base-1

HF is an acid because it donate one proton(H+) to the H2O molecule and converts to F-

HF --------- F- . This is an acid-base pair (OR) conjugate acid-base pair. i,e one proton is differ between these two .

acid          base

H2O acts as base because it accept one proton from the HF and converts to H3O+.

H2O ----------- H3O+

base acid

b) H2O + H2CO3 ---------------- H3O+ + HCO3-

base-1 acid-2    acid-1 base-2

H2O acts as base because it accept one proton from the H2CO3 and converts to H3O+.

H2O --------------- H3O+

'base    acid

H2CO3 acts as an acid because it donate one proton to the H2O and converts to HCO3-.

H2CO3 --------------- HCO3-

acid    base.
