Examine similarities and differences in characteristics of effectiveness for several familiar leadership roles.

Identify the characteristics by which the effectiveness of the following leaders might be evaluated: an assistant coach, a teacher, and a minister.

Prioritize and explain the rationale for these characteristics. What are the ethical issues or challenges associated with prioritization.

Compare and contrast the extent to which there are unique or similar characteristics across the different roles, and the extent to which the criteria are measurable. For example, some of the characteristics you might identify for the role of assistant coach might include the leadership behind a team’s win-loss record, player perceptions, team morale, etc

There are four essential leadership roles as follows:

  1. Inspiring trust - This means that the leader becomes inspirational leader to his/her sub-ordinates and colleagues.
  2. Visionary - The leader must be able to clearly define the team target/goal and the road map to achieve it.
  3. Execute strategy - A leader must be able to execute strategies effectively so as to achieve the team goals and objectives. Also, be able to channelize the efforts and energies of the team members in the direction of organizational goal.
  4. Coaching - A leader should be a person to whom team members look-to for guidance and solution to their difficulties. They help improve the overall performance of individuals such that the team members grow in their career paths.

The above roles are inter-linked with each other such that they are essential to be present in an individual to lead a team. He/she must be able to motivate the team members, guide them and unite the team to achieve the desired results.

An assistant coach must essentially posses the coaching, executing strategy and inspiring trust roles to be an effective leader. This would help him/her motivate the team and resolve their queries and difficulties effectively. Priority is:- Coaching, executing strategy and inspiring trust. The assistant coach is primarily responsible to coach the team by executing the strategy planned by the head coach. This will in-turn motivate team members to perform better to achieve the team goal.

A teacher must possess the coaching, visionary and inspiring trust roles. He/she must be able to effectively educate students and guide them to be knowledgeable and good individuals in life. They must be able to motivate their students are well-trained and educated such that they become good humans, i.e. follow ethical values in life and be of service to mankind. Priority is:- Coaching, inspiring trust and visionary. A teacher must be a guide to students first, teach them and educate them in the respective fields. This will ensure trust and motivate students to reach great heights in their career. They help lay preliminary path and goals for their students. This acts like a starting point for the students' careers.

A minister must possess the roles of visionary, inspiring trust and execute strategy. With the possession of these qualities, a minister will be able to influence and motivate citizens, execute political strategies effectively and provide a futuristic map for development of the state or region or country. Priority is:- Inspiring trust, visionary and execute strategy. A minister has to first gain trust of citizens by being motivational and inspirational via speeches and actions. Then must be able envision the future and politically use the situation for strategy development and execution.
