Ans. COPD is the respiratory disorder with the full name Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It is a disease of the lower respiratory tract in which air pipes entering the lungs, commonly secondary and tertiary bronchioles are constricted leading to obstruction in the amount of air entering and leaving the lungs. This disease have been divided into 4 stages according to the severity of the disease. Common cause of the constriction of the airways is clogging by mucus. This respiratory disorder leads to difficulty in breathing, coughing and ultimately may lead to development of asthma.

As the name implies, this respiratory problem poses threat to the amount of air reaching the lungs. The exchange of air reaching in and out of the airways is badly affected due to clogging of the airways. So, the partial pressure of oxygen decreases in the blood capillaries supplying the alveoli of the lungs. This leads Jimmy to hypoxic condition. The oxygen supplementation helps Jimmy to recover this condition by supplying pure oxygen to the lungs and increase the partial pressure of oxygen in the capillaries.
