The labels on the flowchart to represent the relationship between the production of photons by the sun ( Engelmann's light source) and the distribution of bacteria that Engelmann observed under his microscope is represent as follows:-

1. Sun emits photons at all wavelengths

  2. Prism disperses sunlight into indvidual wavelengths
  3. Alga"s photosynthetic pigments absorb photons at specific wavelengths
  4. Absorbed photons drive photosynthesis in alga.
  5. Alga gives off oxygen as it photosynthesizes
  6. Bacteria attracted to regions of highest oxygen concentration
  7. Number of bacteria in different wavelength regions counted

By doing the experiment Engelmann was capable in order to determine the wavelength of light  at which  rate of photosynthesis is most effective. He used aerotactic bacteria in order to perform this experiment as this type of bacteria is more engaged towards the highest oxygen concentration where they show higher rate of photosynthesis. Hence, by counting the number of bacteria at different wavelength regions , Engelmann was able to determine the wavelength of lights where the bacteria are more engaged which results in the high rate of photosynthesis than other wavelengths of light.
