Answer #1

A steel structure, in the LRFD format, is based on various criteria wherein the degree of loading as well as integrity of the structure, are to be considered as well. In addition, in order to make the design be relevant, the designing requirements need to be durable in nature too. The reliabilities, corresponding to each limit state, are on the basis of the sustainability of the design that are proportionate to the actions that the structural design may have to withstand throughout its lifespan. Therefore, with the corresponding limit state, the codes are built in order to determine the reliability of the structural design which may hence not be uniformed, owing these criteria.

Estimate the allowable bearing capacity (in kPa - using the LRFD methodology) for a 2.25 m by 2.25 m square and 1 m thick concrete footing. The footing is founded at a depth of 5 m. The footing will be supported by a uniform clean sand layer with N60 = 35 (at a depth of about 2.0 m) and void ratio e = 0.40 (Specific gravity Gs=2.7). Groundwater is located 5 m below the foundation depth.
