Phosphoric acid (structure shown below) is a common acid used in buffer solutions. Even though the structure shows three equivalent hydrogen atoms, there are three different pKa values associated with the compound (pKa1 ≈ 2, pKa2 ≈ 7, pKa3 ≈ 12). Why do the three hydrogen atoms have different pKa values? How many of the hydrogen atoms will be removed in a buffer solution at pH 4?
