Given The difficulties in using adult criteria for substance dependence among children and adolescents, how would you alter the criteria to better suit this age group? How do you know if use is typical or problematic?

Answer. To check for substance dependence in children and adolescents the criteria can be :-

1. It should not be a drug prescribed by their doctors or paediatricians.
2. substance withdrawal symptoms can be seen when that particular substance is absent .

3. Changes in appetite and diet.

4. Problems in reaching developmental milestones.

*for children and adolescents no time criteria should be there because in this age even a day or weeks dependence can be wrong and problematic. Thus we should not wait for 3 or 6 months to diagnose substance dependence in children or adolescents. It’s a very crucial stage of life.

The use is problematic when signs and symptoms show up. Signs like Chang in weight , sleep pattern , growth , isolation etc. When individual's daily life activities are being affected , it is problematic.
