Metal medical instruments, glassware and media for microbial culture are usually sterilized in autoclaves. These equipment are rigid and insulated containers where the materials are exposed to high temperatures and pressures.
An autoclave which operates at 125°C is kept at this temperature by having a two-phase mixture of liquid water and vapor with a quality of 0.9 in it. Total volume of the autoclave is 1.2 m3. During a test run, the autoclave is loaded with only the required amount of water (saturated liquid at 25°C). The autoclave is then sealed tightly and the water is heated by an electric heater.
(For your calculations below, neglect everything in the autoclave except the water.)
(a) The company selling the autoclave claims that it takes 30 minutes to go from saturated liquid water at 25°C to the set conditions (125°C, two-phase mixture with quality = 0.9). You see that the electric heater has a maximum power of 1 kW. Is the company’s claim possible? Show calculations to support your answer and explain briefly. Assume that all of the electric heater power goes to the water.
(Hint: You only need the 1st Law to solve this.)
(b) What is the change in entropy of the water? (in kJ/K)
(c) What is the entropy generation? (in kJ/K)

A well-insulated rigid tank contains 2 kg of a saturated liquid-vapor mixture of water at 100 kPa. Initially, three-quarters of the mass is in the liquid phase. An electric resistance heater placed in the tank is now turned on and kept on until all the liquid in the tank is vaporized. Determine the entropy change of the steam during this process. Answer: 8.10 kJ/K Analysis From the steam tables (Tables A-4 through A-6)
(a) An insulated piston cylinder device contains 5 L of saturated liquid water at a constant pressure of 150 kPa. The cylinder was equipped with the electric heater inside it. PROBLEM 4 A feedwater heater operates at steady state with liquid water entering at inlet 1 at 7 bar, 40°C, and a mass flow rate of 70 kg/s. A separate stream of water enters at inlet 2 as a two-phase liquid-vapor mixture at 7 bar with a quality of 97%. Saturated liquid at 7 bar exits the feedwater heater at 3. Ignoring heat transfer with the surroundings and neglecting kinetic and potential energy effects, determine the mass flow rate, in...

1. (15pts) A power plant was assumed to described by an ideal Rankine cycle without any irreversibility. The boiler produces saturated steam at a pressure of 120 bar (I). The steam expands adiabatically thru a turbine exiting as a saturated vapor/liquid mixture at pressure of 0. Ibar (2). The mixture passes thru a condenser (P=0.1 bar) until it is all saturated liquid (3). It is then pumped adiabatically to the boiler pressure of 120bar (4)...
A steam power plant is based on the Rankine cycle with reheat (refer to the figure below). Steam is produced by the boiler/superheater (H-1) at 100 bar and 600 C at a rate of 2.5 kgs. This is expanded to 10 bar in the turbine T-1 and then reheated to 600 °C in heater H-2. The steam is then expanded in turbine T-2 to a pressure of 0.1 bar. The steam is then condensed in condenser (C-1) which operates at...
