Passive force is required to stretch or extend the muscle from its original resting length. This is the elastic force which is the inherent property of the muscle. It is like stretching of a rubber band.

On the other hand, when a muscle is stretched beyond its original length, the passive force increases which causes the recoiling of the muscle to its resting length.
