Natural selection is the mechanism of evolution where as the Population is the unit by which it occurs.
Individuals do not evolve. It is the populations which evolve. A population is a group of organisms which live in a particular area and share the same gene pool as they reproduce among themselves. Variations in the organisms of a population are the raw materials which will be subjected to selection pressures. Best suited trait gets selected.
