If the probability value for sample is small say less than 5 %, that would mean that our sample mean is unusual for the curve. Here, usual or unusual means that whether the sample result is consistent with the claimed or desired value of population parameter. So , in null hypothesis we clearly specify about population or its parameters, thus if the probability is higher it would lead to acceptance of null hypothesis so the result is consistent with the claim whereas if probability is small, Ho will be rejected or the result is not consistent with claim. So general formula to remember is :if result occurs with probability less than 5%, the sample mean is unusual. So ,
