1. The Contras were the numerous right-wing paramilitary organizations supported and sponsored by the U.S. who were involved in response to the Nicaraguan government's marxist Sandinista Junta of National Reconstruction from 1979 to the early 1990s.

U.S. strategy on Nicaragua tended to advocate support for anti-Sandinista "contras," since several people interested in U.S. intelligence activities, including Richard Nixon, believed that "defeat for the insurgents will possibly contribute to a violent Marxist resistance revolution with Mexico and other countries with Central America."
