Should patients and their families be required to pay for the treatment that physicians find as medically futile care? And should this determination be made by the insurance company, the government, the patient’s doctor, or some combination thereof?
Medical futility is the term that indicates the medical interventions that do not benefit the patient significantly. It refers to specific intervention, not to the medical process. It can be qualitative or quantitative.
The futility of medical care is hard to determine as such care interventions may be surprisingly better or may deteriorate the patient's condition. However, the medical futility should be avoided by the physician as they know better whether the intervention is medically futile or not. In case the medically futile care is found out, the patients may claim the additional payment. The medically futiliy is more often the choice of the patient in order to gain more benefit which may be less significant with respect to the cost of treatment of intervention.
The futility of medical care is best determined by the physicians or doctors. However, medical insuracnce companies may not pay for medical futility and it puts the burden on the patients family. However, the physicians asks for patients' consent for the medical treatment that could be less significant.

Physicians have two types of patients: private patients who pay directly or with insurance, and Medicaid patients whose care is paid for by the state. Physicians must lower prices to attract more private patients, but they can add unlimited Medicaid patients at a constant price. The situation facing Dr. Casey is depicted in Figure 11-4. Units of medical service (say, number of patients x number of visits) are measured on the horizontal axis. How many units of medical service will...
Discussion Question #2: While in private practice, physicians may determine that they will not accept certain new patients because of their inability to pay or because they have an insurance plan with a poor reimbursement policy. Should all physicians be required to accept a certain number of patients who cannot pay their bills? In other words, should physicians be required to do a certain amount of charity care? Explain your answer.
How could you rewrite or paraphrase this one:
Physicians do not have unlimited discretion to refuse to accept a person as a new patient. Because much of medicine is involved with federal regulations, physicians cannot refuse to accept a person for ethnic, racial, or religious reasons. Some physicians refuse to treat attorneys. The complexities involved in capacity assessment have stimulated efforts to develop standardized measures and quantifiable scales to measure capacity. These efforts are ambitious and worthwhile; however, the clinical...
Ethically, health-care providers should refuse all patients that do not have the ability to pay. refuse patients when the practice is already oversubscribed. only refuse patients when the provider has announced his or her retirement. refer all low-income patients to a charitable organization instead of providing any health care to these patients. It is never acceptable to withhold information from patients for fear they will refuse treatment. True False Knowledge that, if revealed, would harm not only the client but...
Discussion Question #2 Medical tourism is a recent trend in health care. Patients go to a different country for either urgent or elective medical procedures. The procedures are the same procedures being done in U.S. hospitals and outpatient surgery centers, often by American-trained physicians who have moved back home. Medical tourism is fast becoming a worldwide, multi-billion- dollar industry. In fact, some insurance companies are paying for the cost of the procedures, as costs are far less than those charged...

Discussion Question #3: A source of potential problems for health care practitioners is advertising. Buying print ads, creating radio spots, or sponsoring websites are commonplace activities for today's health care practitioners, which may subject them to a different type of lawsuit.
