Pleomorphic bacteria are bacteria that shows variability in shape and size in response to variation in environmental conditions.

Corynebacterium diphtheriae is Gram positive non acid fast non motile rods. Corynebacterium diphtheriae is a pleomorphic bacteria. Corynebacterium diphtheriae are non sporing and non motile .

Corynebacterium diphtheriae is the causative agent of diphtheria. Diphtheria is serious respiratory infection that lead to shortness of breath, hear failure and paralysis. Virulent strains of diphtheria bacilli produce a very powerful exotoxin. The pathogenic effect of the bacilli are due to the toxin.

The common complications are;

Asphyxia due to mechanical obstruction of respiratory passage by the pseudomembrane.

Acute circulatory failure.

Post diphtheric paralysis.
