There exist certain phenotypes in a population of a particular species that makes the individuals possessing those phenotypes superior in their ability to survive under the selective conditions. For example, indiviudals with bigger bodies survive better in colder climates than individuals with smaller bodies. Thus, the individuals with bigger body sizes are favoured by natural selection.

Also, there exists a difference in the reproductive output among the individuals capable to reproduce. This difference exists due an inherent phenotype enabling it to survive better under the selective conditions. Thus, the phenotypes wthat increase reproductive output are favoured.

Natural selection is a non-random process operating in populations through existing phenotypic differences.

Natural selection leads to phenotypes that are better suited to the selective conditions but do not lead to perfectly optimal organisms
