This is examined by giving an inactive substance such as a sugar pill to a group of patients. The inactive substance is known as a placebo.
Placebo effect is quite common in everyday life. For example, a friend of mine once had a very bad headache. I told her that drinking a cup of coffee might help. In reality, i go de caffeinated coffee for her. However, the mere expectation improved her headache.
