Answer #1

Answer 1: True

Explanation: Colon is the part of large intestine; large intestine is the last organ of the gastrointestinal tract.

Bacteroides are anaerobic Gram negative organisms. They support the metabolic activities like membrane transport, amino acid biosynthesis etc. these bacteria feed on plant polysaccharides and glycan. This way they constitute a symbiotic relationship with the host.

Lactobacilli are Gram positive lactose fermenting and lactic acid producing bacteria aids in vitamin production, maintains the PH and constitutes the normal flora of the gut.

Besides these there are some other bacterial species present in large intestine is Enterococcus, Escherichia coli, Bifidobacterium.

Answer 2: False

Explanation: Energy production is more efficient when oxygen is present. In the process of cellular respiration if it is an aerobic (in presence of oxygen) respiration, then complete oxidation of a glucose molecule yields 38 ATP molecules and the remaining energy is released as heat which is used to maintain the body temperature.

Cellular respiration consists of three steps, Glycolysis, TCA (tricarboxylic acid) cycle and the electron transport . Majority of the ATP is generated in the last step which is driven by the presence of oxygen as oxygen acts as the terminal electron acceptor.

In case of anaerobic respiration like fermentation where lactic acid is synthesized from the Pyruvic acid (product of Glycolysis) or ethanol is synthesized from the Pyruvic acid, net gain of ATP is only two molecules.
