Describe the different types of attacks that can be conducted on network components.
Different types of attacks that can be conducted on network components are:
Denial-of-Service Attack - DOS attack is type of
attack in which a machine or resource is made unavailable to the
users connected to it by flooding the machine with traffic or
sending unwanted information that crashes it.
Eavesdropping - Eavesdropping attack is a type of sniffing attack in which data transmitted and received from an unsecured network is stolen by the someone in that network without the knowledge of the user.
Identity Spoofing - Spoofing in which an attacker may disguise someone else's identity or IP Address. The actual IP Address of the attacker is hidden and impersonates others identity. Example - Phishing Attack
Sniffing - An attack in which data may be sniffed using a sniffer within network. Only unencrypted data can be sniffed or captured and further the data can be read using a sniffer tool.
Phishing - A social engineering attack in which user data such as id and passwords, credit card number, bank account details are stolen. This can be achieved by duplicating a trusted website such as a bank website, further sending user the an email link or a text message and then the user may fall for it by entering the details within the website which is sent directly to the attacker.
Compromised-Key Attack - A key is a secret key which helps an attacker to intercept a secured information. Once the attacker has gained access to that key , it is termed as compromised key. Further, the attacker can use that key to gain access the secured information. The sender and receiver is not aware of the attack.
DNS spoofing - DNS spoofing also termed as DNS Cache poisoning is an attack in which the attacker alters a DNS record and further the traffic is redirected to a fraudent website. Example - You might be searching for google dot com and the attack has used DNS spoofing to redirect the traffic some other website and now instead of opening google dot com, some other fraudent website may open ( which is set by the attacker).
