Answer-

In respiration simple sugars like glucose is oxidized within the mitochondria of the cell into CO2 and water to release energy.

Respiration within a cell takes place into two parts-

1. GLYCOLYSIS- This process takes place within the cytoplasm of the cell. In this step glucose is converted into pyruvic acid.

By glycolysis, the following reaction takes place:

1 Glucose molecule -------------> 2 pyruvate + ATP +NADP

(6 Carbon molecule) (3 carbon molecule)

2. KREB'S CYCLE- This takes place within the mitochondria. Pyruvic acid is converted into CO2 and H2O by energy currency (ATP, NADPH, etc) at each step.

Phosphorylation- This is also called energy building step, as this step involves addition of Phosphate to organic molecule.

ADP +iP ----> ATP

Sugar cleavage- I this complex sugar are broken into smaller parts or units. Example- sucrose gets cleaved into glucose and fructose.

Fermentation- In this, micro organism breaks sugars into alcohol and water and release small amount of energy.

Electron transport- This involves transfer of electrons in a series of redox reactions to produce ATP.
