Employee performance can be defined as the way, extent, and efficiency with which an employee fulfills his or her job duties and executes the tasks assigned. Job performance may also relate to the effectiveness and quality of the outputs. The performance of employees can be measured through the appraisal systems and other ways, which can measure the speed, efficiency, quality, depth, and consistency of outcomes/outputs, while the trust factor may also be assessed. In a globalized world, the work environment and workplaces across nations might be getting similar in their attributes and functionalities to a greater extent. However, there are still certain differences due to culture, demographics, economy, pollical/religious landscapes, stage of development, and other aspects unique to a region or nation. The below-given approaches may be the most effective in UAE for managers to enhance employee performance in my opinion.
Multicultural Teams
UAE is one of the countries of the world having the largest migration rates. The nation and the region employ workers from many different countries and cultures including India, Australia, the USA, Philippines, and Indonesia among others. The trend invariably gives rise to multicultural teams in the workplaces of the country, where people from many different customs and diverse ethnic backgrounds come together to work.
The cultural diversities and identities are also the deposits of practices, knowledge, attitudes, values, and concepts that can be valuable to work ethics and performance. Employees can gain from the inputs when working in a diverse and multicultural organization as found in UAE. For instance, employees from the eastern cultures can learn from the work-oriented and the more disciplined cultures and work ethics of the west and be more result and performance-oriented. The more relaxed and patient attitudes prevalent in the eastern cultures can be adopted by the employees from Western and American Nations, which will help them stay more focussed and attentive on their tasks, and also enhance their work satisfaction. Therefore multicultural teams can provide for improvement in the quality of the outputs and increase in performance for all the stakeholders and employees involved.
When employees appreciate and understand each other's culture,
they can get hold of the bigger picture and work beyond their
self-interest, which impacts performance positively. Multicultural
teams also face lesser conflicts after a certain degree of
assimilation has been attained, as employees start to enjoy their
work and workplaces, which bring to them a world of knowledge and
experiences that they might have never attained while working in
their own countries or in an environment that employs people from a
given and specific background only.
An understanding of culture from different regions enhances the
maturity levels and intellect of employees, which reduces conflicts
and enhances performances. A recent survey found that around 52% of
employees in the UAE agree strongly to learning other cultures, and
another 40% agree to it. Employees in the country hold the view
that there are many practical reasons to know more about the
cultures that are different from their own. Such knowledge makes
their everyday life and dealings at the workplace and even in their
personal lives easier. Employees also appreciate cultural
acceptance and tolerance and find cultural learning a highly
appropriate way to have better communications. Improved
communication lessen ambiguity and enhance performance.
Attractive Compensation and Benefits
A lot many companies in UAE pursue talent management approaches and plan their human capital strategically so that it generates greater value for business and helps an organization achieve its goals and sustainability. Talent management is reflected in the ability of an organization to recruit, organize, and retain the most talented employees in the job market.
Attractive compensation and benefits are a proven way to recruit and retain the best talent. As we find in the UAE and other countries of the Arab world, many of the employees from Asia and even the Western regions may find employment in the region or seek transfer because of the better benefits and compensations that may be provided in Gulf countries. The rewards help a firm recruit “the right man for the right job”, which also provides for the best performance of an employee in a given job role. Benefits including rewards may help an organization gain maximum from the potential of an employee. Better compensation and salaries also help organizations in UAE attract the best talent from across the world and these employees can also be developed further with upgraded behavior, skills, and knowledge so that their performance improves even further.
