Answer #1

Option b. the surface area grows but more quickly than the volume.

Explanation: Surface area refers to the area outside the cell. (length x breadth x no. of sides)

Volume refers to the internal space of the object. In order to understand their relationship, let us see a numeric example. (Length x breadth x height)

Let us take a cell of 1, 2, 3,and 4 cubic sizes, then

Size of the cell Surface area (cm2) Volume (cm3)
1 cm cubic cell 1x1x6 (length=1, breadth = 1 and as it is a cube no. of sides = 6) = 6 cm2 1x1x1 (l=b=h=1cm)= 1cm3
2 cm cubic cell 2x2x6= 24 2x2x2=8
3 cm cubic cell 3x3x6=54 3x3x3=27
4 cm cubic cell 4x4x6 = 96 4x4x4 = 64
5 cm 5x5x6 = 150 5x5x5=125

Hence, from the above hypothetical example, it can be clearly seen that for the same numbers, surface is growing more rapidly than the volume.
