  • Closed: - Closed dimension is represented by puzzle or board games and maize games, in which only one way of approach is possible.
  • Simple/complex: - The concept of simple and complex dimension can be best understood by assessing the various play games available for children in class room.

Simple: - A simple doll or toy which does not have multiple arrangements or components forms the simple dimension.

Complex: - A multiple step involving play games like building blocks, having blocks of different colors, size and shape needed to be arranged in a particular way to form a structure and rearranging it from another represents a complex dimension. A play game involving complex dimension holds the attention of child for a longer duration.

  • High mobility/low mobility: -

High mobility: - This dimension of environment provides maximum bodily movement. Playing in wide space involving running, jumping, touching, handling articles represent a high mobility and is mostly an wider play area or play ground kind of a protected place in school or classroom.

Low mobility:- It involves limited movement opportunity typically involving either hands or limbs. A stationary cycling activity or building block while sitting represents low mobility dimension.

  • Soft/hard: - Softness/hardness is related to physical property of material which is responsive to touch or handling. Example of each classroom setting

           Soft: - cushions and pillows, soft toys etc all represent the softness dimension.

            Hard: - wooden table, chair, cupboard, wall etc all from the hard dimension

  • Intrusive: - child responds in different way at different times of playing or activities to intrusion by other playmate or others approach for participation.

Group play activity area represents an intrusive area, where as isolated activity area like child’s chair and desk represents a seclusion area.
