Question

l. Suppose we want to try to construct a very large parallel plate capacitor of C 1 Fusing square plates. (a) If the dielectric is air (e 1), and the plates are separated by 1 cm, what dimensions will the plates have? (b) Will this capacitor fit within a football field (50x100 square yards: 2.54 cm/in and 36 inlyd) or vice versa? To answer this, calculate the total number of square yards for each and compare them. Hopefully this problem will give you an appreciation both for the importance of high dielectric constants and for the technology thats giving us 3000-F capacitors that fit on boards!

A parallel plate capacitor has square plates of dimensions 5 times 5 cm and separation 2 mm. The space between the plates is filled with a material of dielectric constant K= 4. The charges on the plates are plusminus 5 times 10^-8 C. Find: the capacitance; the potential difference between the plates; the magnitude of the electric field between the plates; the electric energy density between the plates; and the total electric energy.
