Explain what it is that selection is actually acting on and how such variation is distributed throughout a population (gene pool) (blending vs. independent assortment).

These variations come in population by mutations, immigration , emigration etc as new gene or characteristics are added and some are lost. Natural selection act on these . According to blending theory ,offspring have intermediate characteristics to their parents but environment also affect those offspring characteristics and overall population gene pool is influenced by natural selection , variation ,immi immigration and emigration.
