Mcpb is the chemical of an agrochemical category. The IUPAC name of Mcpb is 4-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)butanoic acid.

There are majorly three methods to made the Mcpb

1. Reaction of 2-methyl-4-chlorophenol with the butyrolacetone. In this reaction presence of sodium hydroxide (concentrated) is required.
2. Chlorination of ortho-cresol and its coupling with the gamma-chlorobutyric acid will also produce Mcpb.
3. Butyrolactone reaction with sodium 4-chloro-o-cresylate will also produce Mcpb.

Uses:

Mcpb is the phenoxy herbicide and used to control the annual and perennial broadleaf weeds. This chemical is officially registered for the use on pea crops. The weeds like buttercup, Canadian thistle, common lambsquarters and morning glory also treated with Mcpb.

Mcpb is also used as the pesticide but there is no residential use of Mcpb. In the United States Mcpb must be registered by EPA. EPA usually obtains the set of studies from the producers of the pesticides.
