What is Software Defined Networking?

Software Defined Networking, SDN in short, is a modern approach and architecture of computer networking employing use of open protocols and interfaces like OpenFlow to initialize, control, manipulate and manage the network behaviour programmatically and dynamically. It also provides abstraction for lower-level functionality. For modern day, dynamic applications and fast changing business requirements, it is an ideal architecture as it separates the network control and forwarding functions. It provides automated, on-demand delivery and mobility to cloud architectures through multiple kind of network technologies, virtual servers, and central control console etc. making networks more flexible and agile.

Origins of Software Defined Networking:

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) finds its roots in the release of Java by Sun Microsystems in 1995. An early SDN project was AT&T's GeoPlex. Under this project, network APIs and dynamic aspects of the Java language were leveraged to implement middleware networks.

In 1998, a startup WebSprocket designed a network operating system and a runtime model in which devices can instantiate network stack(s), interfaces, and protocols as multiple threads

In July 2000, VMFoundry and VMServer were released by WebSprocket. It was termed as 10 years ahead of its time. In 2000, Supranet - a fusion of the physical and the digital worlds as "Internet of Things" was introduced by Gartner Group.

During April and May 2001, Ohio State University and OARnet ran the first SDN test and developed the first practical SDN use case for Internet2.

Bob Burke and Zac Carman in 2003 conceptualized a SDN named Service Preference Architecture (SPA) as a collection of network embedded computing techniques to control the operation of Network Elements such as content servers, routers, switches and gateways. In 2011, Open Networking Foundation was founded in order to promote SDN and OpenFlow.

During 2014 Interop and Tech Field Day, Avaya presented software-defined networking by using shortest path bridging and OpenStack.

Components of Software Defined Networking:

Following are the components of any SDN architecture:

1. Controller(s): This/These is/are the brain of network known as SDN Controller(s). It provides a centralized view of overall network and functionalities to manipulate underlying components to handle network traffic.
2. Southbound APIs: These APIs like OpenFlow are used to transmit information to switches and routers in “below” direction.
3. Northbound APIs: These APIs are used to communicate with applications and business logic in “above” direction.

Benefits of Software Defined Networking:

• Directly Programmable: It is directly programmable as control functions are separated from forwarding functions.
• Centralized Management: SDN controller provides the overall central view of network.
• Agile & Flexible: It enables businesses to deploy applications in no-time as per changing business requirements and needs.
• Support for Open Standards & Vendor-neutrality: Use of open standards simplifies the network design making it independent from proprietary devices and protocols.
