  • Peptides are hydrophilic (or water soluble) and therefore they con not cross plasma membrane. That's why their receptors are located on plasma membrane. Example - Insulin (a peptide) hormone uses tyrosine kinase receptor (which is located on plasma membrane)
  • Steroid hormones are lipophilic (or lipid soluble) and thus can cross plasma membrane easily. That's why their receptor are intracellular - cytoplasmic or intranuclear. Example - testosterone (a steroid hormone) uses intracellular receptor
