Synthesis of alkyne is based on two alkyl halides.

Both the dihalide undergo E2 mechanism twice in order to get alkyne. Strong base is used to remove the proton from dihalide by E2 mechanism.

First is Geminal dihalide ( Two halogen groups are situated at single carbon)

Second is vicinal dihalide ( Two halogens groups are at two different carbon.)
