Discuss the difference between permanent straightening of hair for instance as is popular in Asia and “relaxing” ethnic hair to straighten it. What chemistries are used and what is the level of damage to the hair.
The basic chemistry of curly hair is the presence of sulphur atoms in the hair proteins. These sulphur atoms bond with each other to form disulfide bond. The more the disulfide bonds, the more curly the hair is. In case of permanent straightening, these disulfide bonds are broken down permanently by the use of chemicals such as relaxers. This contain alkalis which denature proteins. It breaks the curls, but does not damage the hair. In order to stop further breakage, keratin conditioner is used which completely repair any damage done to hairs.
In case of temporary straightening, overuse may cause 'heat damage'.It can only be repaired if the damaged hair is cut off.
