Answer #1

The law which relates

1)Angle of Incidence

2)Angle of Transmission

3)Refractive Indices of two mediums

is known as Snell's law.

According to this law, we can write the following equation:

nl sin (01) = n2 sin (O2)

where n1,n2=refractive indices of two mediums

  \Theta 1=angle of incidence

  \Theta 2=angle of transmission

Now, according to the problem, the values of the two angles are given while we know the value of the refractive index of air, which is=1 so all we have to do is to find out the value of the remaining parameter which is the refractive index of that "mysterious material", say,n2.

So, we can write

n2 = (nlsin (01) / sin (2)

Now, by putting the values, we can get

n2 = (1 * sin (70)) / sin (40)

= (0.94) (0.64)

= 1.46
